Let's Speak Thai: Let's learn - Final consonants (ตัวสะกด)

Let's learn

Final consonants (ตัวสะกด)

Read the following lesson and watch the following video for the pronunciation. If you're still confuse, just leave me your questions ka ^_^ have fun ^_^

Some consonants represent two different sounds when they are used as the initial and final consonants of a syllable. Final consonants are divided into 8 groups:

1. ก ending sound (แม่ กก) consisting of ก ข ค ฆ (- k)

The consonants in this groups represent the ending sound of
which sounds like ending with k in English but not to stress k at the end (Privately, I think it sounds like ending with g in the word log but not to stress g at the end. ก sounds like g in the word go.
In Thai we don't stress consonants when they are used as the ending. That's why I can notice easily when foreigner speak Thai. I think it's the most difficult part of pronunciation for foreigner to pronounce Thai word with ending but nothing is too difficult to learn)

Example ลาก (laak)

เลข = เลก (lek)

นาค = นาค (nak)

เมฆ = เมก (mek)

( = represent the sound of the word)

2. ด ending sound (แม่ กด) consisting of จ ด ต ถ ท ธ ฎ ฏ ฑ ฒ ช ซ ศ ษ ส (- t)

The consonants in this groups represent the ending sound of which sounds like ending with d and t in English but not to stress d and t at the end.

Example ลาด (laad)

อาจ = อาด (ard)

เขต = เขต (khet)

3. ending sound (แม่ กบ) consisting of บ ป พ ภ ฟ (- p)

The consonants in this groups represent the ending sound of which sounds like ending with b and p in English but not to stress b and p at the end

Example ลาบ (laab) (Say the word la and then touch your upper lip with the lower one. See! you don't have to stress b. You can do like this with the word ending with other consonants in this group too ^_^ easy?)

ลาภ = ลาบ (laab) (See! you can do the same because they sound the same)

ภาพ = พาบ (paap) (we use พ for ภ to show representing of it because they both sound the same, remember that?)

(There are only few words ending with and most is from foreign language such as English. For example ยีราฟ = yee-raab It is the word for giraffe in Thai ^_^)

This is very easy sound to pronounce and remember. Notice your lips when you say these consonants and you will see that it's the sound from the lips. Only the last one is from the lips and teeth.

4. ending sound (แม่ กง) is only the one consonant which sounds this way.

Ending with ง sounds like ending with ng in the word song.

Example ซอง (song)

5. ending sound (แม่ กน) consisting of น ณ ญ ร ล ฬ (- n)

The consonants in this groups represent the ending sound of which sounds like ending with n in English but not to stress n

Example กาน (kaan)

ญาณ = ยาน (yan) (we use ย for ญ to show representing of it because they both sound the same, remember that?)

กาญจน์ = กาน (kaan) (In this case จ and น don't represent any sounds. Notice the mark above น That means both จ and น are marked not to pronounce)

การ = กาน (kaan)

กาล = กาน (kaan)

กาฬ = กาน (kaan)

With the above example you can see that if the words begin with the same consonant, consist of the same vowel, and end with the final consonants in the same groups (either without tone marks or same tone marks), they sound the same.

6. ending sound (แม่ กม) is only the one consonant which sounds this way.

Ending with ม sound like ending with m in English but not to stress m.

Example นาม (naam)

7. ending sound (แม่ เกย) is only the one consonant which sounds this way.

Ending with ย sounds like ending with y in the word toy.

Example ดอย (doy)

Ending with ย sounds like the sound of some endings in English such as -oi, uy, -oy and -y

8. ending sound (แม่ เกอว) is only the one consonant which sounds this way.

Ending with ว sounds like ending with w in the word now

Example มะนาว (ma-now)

Ending with ว sounds like the sound of some endings in English such as -ow, -own and aw

The words without final consonants are in the group of แม่ ก กา

Watch the video again but do mute your speaker first then you try to pronounce those words by yourself
